How to set up an early solid state Williams or Bally pinball game

Bring the cabinet and back box into the room where you will be setting up the game. Stand the cabinet up on it’s bottom so the coin-door is pointed at the ceiling (Image 1).

Attach the front legs, do not over tighten bolts. Use a 5/8” wrench (Image 2).

Lower the cabinet so the front legs are on the floor.

Have a helper raise the back of the cabinet so the rear legs can be attached. If you have a sawhorse, these are perfect for this procedure.

Once the rear legs are attached, set the game on the floor.

Pull the power cord from inside the cabinet and insert into the diagonal slot in the cabinet pedestal.

Remove the backglass from the back-box and lean against the wall in a safe out of the way place.

Have a helper help raise the back-box on top of the cabinet pedestal and place it near center side to side.

For Williams games: place the back-box ahead of where it will be and slide the back-box to the rear until it catches with the support brackets. Secure backbox to cabinet using four bolts and washers with a 9/16 wrench. Do not over tighten.

Connect the ground braid under the wing nut and washer . Reach into the cabinet and pull up all loose harness connectors through the cabinet pedestal  access hole. Connect all harness connectors making sure the wire colors match.

Bally machines: Place the cabinet ground braid under the screw at the bottom of the backbox (Image 4).

Pull up the harness connectors and place them at the connectors on the MPU, Lamp driver, solenoid driver, rectifier board and sound board if applicable (Image 5). Female connectors are all keyed so they can not be placed on the wrong male pin connector.

After all connections are complete and well seated, plug the power cord into a properly grounded wall outlet. Turn the game power on and watch the MPU’s LED for activity.

Williams games: Both red LED’s should flash and go off. Game should be in attract mode.

Bally games: watch the single green MPU LED for 7 flashes. With the 7th flash the game should be in attract mode.

Close the lamp/display door and install the backglass (Image 6).

Level the game front and back and tighten the lock nuts under each leg with a 9/16” wrench (Image 3)

A new ball is included with every game. Clean it and let it roll into the trough between the flippers. If you have a multi-ball game make sure the correct number of balls are installed.

Close the playfield glass and install the lock down bar and lock with the lever pushed to the right.

Add credits and close the coin-door. Some games may be set on “Free-Play”.

Close the coin door and press start for your first game.

Enjoy!
